Is Fallout 4 constantly crashing on you on your computer or another device? This is a common issue for thousands of players. It’s a nuisance and it makes gameplay less fun. Luckily, there are a variety of methods you can use for each device you are using. For computers, we recommend method 4: Disable antivirus. For Playstation and Xbox One, we recommend Method 5: Delete & Reinstall the Game. Scroll down to these if you’re in a rush.

Why is Fallout 4 Crashing?

Whether you’re playing on Playstation 4, Xbox One, or PC, you may encounter a crash. The reasons may be different for each console or PC user. It could crash while it’s loading or right in the middle of a quest. Either way, the crash is annoying and inconvenient, but there are different reasons for each device you are playing on.

How To Fix Fallout 4 Crashing Issues on Computer

There are a few different methods for fixing the crashing issue for Fallout 4 depending on which device you are using to play it on. For the computer, there are quite a few ways you can fix the crash:

Installing patches
Changing graphic options
Updating your graphics card driver
Disable antivirus programs
Reconfigure Fallout 4 settings

Method 1: Install Patches

There are many bugs in the game, as complained about numerous times to Bethesda, that can be fixed by installing the latest patches available. These patches contain vital updates for the game to run smoothly. They improve the performance, stability, and security of the applications that are on your computer that make Fallout 4 run properly.

Simply check for patches available for your game and restart your computer. Load Fallout 4 to see if the changes made a difference. If not, continue to the next method.

Method 2: Change Graphics Options

If your graphics settings are set to high, this can cause your game to crash if your computer doesn’t have enough power to run it. You can change the graphic settings to see if the game will run better. Here’s how to do it:

Open the launcher
Choose Options
Select Video Settings
Lower the graphic settings

You can also choose Windowed Mode to help it run better. This varies from computer to computer depending on the hardware and software.

Method 3: Update Your Graphics Card Driver

If your graphics card is outdated or missing, then you won’t be able to play Fallout 4 without some sort of issue. You should make sure both of them work correctly before trying to play the game again.

You can update your driver by going directly to their website. You can then download the latest driver and install it on your computer. If you don’t know what your graphics card driver is, here is how to find it for Windows 10:

Click on Start
Search for Device Manager
Click to expand the Display adapters tab

Under display adapters is your graphics card driver. This is the name of the manufacturer that you will want to look up for a new or updated driver.

If you don’t want to take the time to look everything up and just want to get right back to Fallout 4, use Driver Easy. This automatically scans your system then uses the internet to find the correct drivers for it.

Method 4: Disable Antivirus Programs

While your antivirus program can keep troublesome issues at bay, it can also create problems for Fallout 4. Here’s a simple way you can check to see if your antivirus is the culprit for your crashing issues:

  • Select Start
    Go to Settings
    Click on Update & Security
    Choose Windows Security
    Click Virus & Threat Protection
    Manage Settings
    Turn Real-time protection off
    Try running your game again

If your game runs flawlessly with the antivirus protection turned off, then you know this is the issue. You will have to add Fallout 4 to the list for allowed apps.  If this method didn’t work for you, try the next one.

    Method 5: Setting Reconfiguration

If you’re still having issues with Fallout 4, you can try configuring your settings. Here are some things to check:

Check computer resolution. Your computer resolution and Fallout 4 screen resolution should be the same. If they aren’t, it will cause a crash
Navigate to graphics adapter and resolution settings in Fallout 4 and check windows mode and borderless
Uncheck Enable intro Video in your Fallout 4 settings
Uncheck enable God rays in your settings

These are the 5 simplest ways you can fix Fallout 4 crashing issues on your PC. Now, let’s talk about Playstation 4.

How To Fix Fallout 4 Crashing Issues on Playstation 4

If Fallout 4 keeps crashing on Playstation 4, here are some easy steps you can try to fix it

    Reset the game
    Power cycle the PS4
    Disable mods
    Delete mods
    Uninstall & reinstall Fallout 4

    Method 1: Reset the Game

Sometimes Fallout 4 crashes for no reason and all it takes is restarting the game. Here’s how to do that:

  • Go to your dashboard by pressing the PS button on the controller
    Highlight Fallout 4
    Press options
    Close Application and press X
    Highlight Yes
Restart by selecting Fallout 4 and press X

This is the simplest way you can try to get your game up and running again. If it didn’t work, try the next method.

Method 2: Power Cycle the PS4

Your PS4 works hard and sometimes it gets overloaded with information and static. You can get rid of it and refresh your console by performing a power cycle. Here’s how to do that:

Turn off the PS4 by holding the PS button on the controller
    DO NOT ENTER REST MODE
Wait for the light to go out on the console
    Unplug the power cable

Plug the power cable back in
Turn on the console with the PS button on the controller
    Try the game again

Mods are cool, but they can create havoc on your Playstation and Fallout 4 game. Disable the mods and try playing the game again. You can do this by entering the Fallout 4 settings and going into the mods section. Find the ones you want to uninstall in your library and select the disable option.

    Method 4: Delete Mods

If you find that disabling the mods helped, you may want to consider deleting them altogether. You can follow the steps in method 3, but instead of disabling the mods, click delete and remove the mod from your library.

Method 5: Uninstall & Reinstall the Game

Select Saved Data in System Storage

You will find multiple options. You will want to delete just the game. Do not delete your saved game data or anything else.
